The Space Between: Denja Harris Brings Innovative Fiber Art to Oceanside Museum

The Space Between: Texture Studies by Denja Harris opens this month at Oceanside Museum of Art, showcasing the innovative yarn paintings of a South Bay artist who’s redefining fiber art’s place in contemporary galleries.

Harris’s experimental approach to what she calls “yarn paintings” challenges traditional art hierarchies while exploring the intersection of emotion, material, and meaning.

Denja Harris

Meet the Artist

Denja Harris represents a new generation of artists who refuse to be confined by traditional categories. Working out of San Diego‘s South Bay, she creates experimental soft sculptures that blur the lines between painting, sculpture, and textile art.

Her approach is refreshingly intuitive, building layered, free-form abstract patterns that develop organically rather than following predetermined plans.

What makes Harris’s work particularly compelling is her commitment to sustainable practices. She intentionally sources second-hand and dead-stock yarn, transforming discarded materials into vibrant new artworks.

This approach adds another layer of meaning to pieces that already explore themes of healing, vulnerability, and connection.

Breaking Down Boundaries

Harris tackles something important with her work—the artificial hierarchy that places “fine art” above “craft.” By using yarn, a material traditionally associated with domesticity and cultural storytelling, she challenges institutions to reconsider what belongs in gallery spaces.

Her vibrant woven and draped pieces demand to be taken seriously as fine art while honoring the material’s rich cultural history.

The exhibition title perfectly captures Harris’s exploration of liminal spaces where emotion, material, and meaning intersect. Her work invites us to consider how color, pattern, and texture can create sites of genuine human connection.

The Visual Experience

Harris’s creations offer what OMA describes as a “visual sensory experience.” These aren’t static wall hangings but dynamic pieces that engage with space and light in ways that change as we move around them.

The free-form patterns and organic development of each piece mean we discover new details and relationships the longer we spend with them.

Her improvisational approach—using experimentation as both a starting point and a response mechanism—creates works that feel alive and immediate, capturing something essential about the creative process itself.

Recognition and Community

Harris has been building recognition throughout San Diego’s art community, with exhibitions and workshops at respected institutions like Mingei International Museum, San Diego City College, and Art Produce.

This solo exhibition at OMA represents a significant step in her career and brings her innovative approach to a wider audience.

Celebration and Context

The museum will host an Exhibition Celebration that promises to be special, as it will also celebrate two other new exhibitions—Fabulous Fiber and The Art of Surfing—creating an evening that showcases different aspects of contemporary California art and culture.
